Our Club

Shihan-Peter-Jennings-soloWelcome to Kyokushin Karate Auckland. We are part of New Zealand Kyokushin Karate (Ltd.), the organisation headed by Shihan Peter Jennings, Director of NZKK and the Wellington based Branch Chief of IKO Matsushima.

NZKK has its genesis in the late 1970’s when Shihan Jennings, Sensei Ron Discombe and Sempai Jim Jennings established the Marist Kyokushin-kai Karate Club in the Wellington suburb of Newtown. The Marist Club developed into one of the most successful clubs in the country, producing many quality black-belts, national champions and New Zealand representatives.

NZKK is committed to the physical, technical and emotional development of students through the traditional and modern Kyokushin training methodology developed by the late Sosai Masutatsu Oyama and supported by Kancho Yoshikazu Matsushima. Shihan Ron Discombe

Sensei Ron Discombe 2Sensei Ron is one of the early pioneers of Kyokushin karate in New Zealand. Having commenced training in 1969, Sensei travelled to the UK and Japan in the early 1970’s for extensive training with the best and hardest fighters of the day.

Shihan Ron is one of the very few New Zealanders to have competed in two World Tournaments – achieving the rare distinction of being among the last 32 competitors (in the 1983 event in Tokyo).

Shihan has just completed his 5th Dan at the Kyokushin Karate World Cup Tournament in China (November 2018).
